Close the processing season with a short action list based on actual results. Compare growing records, appointments, final instructions, invoices, sales and remaining inventory with the original plan.
Choose changes that the records support, name who will make them and set a review point for the next season.
Compare the growing plan with the processing outcome
Review the animals’ ages, measured or estimated sizes, dates and any reasons the plan changed. Separate feed, health, weather and scheduling observations instead of attributing every difference to one cause.
Identify questions for a veterinarian, nutrition adviser or Extension agent where animal performance needs investigation. Processing records can show a pattern without diagnosing it.
Compare sales and household use with remaining packages
For a household, note which cuts fit ordinary meals and which remained unfamiliar. For a farm business, compare actual sales and reorders with the inventory left on hand.
Distinguish a product that sold poorly from one that was unavailable, poorly described or offered in an inconvenient package. The practical improvement may be education or packaging rather than a different animal or flavor.
Reconcile the costs
Connect the processing invoices and other costs to the relevant groups. Use the same calculation method when comparing seasons, and explain any change in what is included.
A higher sales total does not by itself show better results if more animals, labor or unsold inventory were required. University of Maryland Extension’s value-added guidance emphasizes understanding both costs and customers. Value-added product planning.
Assign each change and its review date
Select a few specific changes, name who will handle each one and set a point for review. Examples include submitting clearer cutting instructions, adjusting a package request or beginning the processing conversation earlier.
Keep the action list with the season records and use it before ordering the next animals. Bring processing or packaging changes to Underground Processing while the next appointments are being planned.
